Hi, I’m Rebecca!
I am a freelance developmental editor based in NYC who loves supporting writers and creatives as they bring their vision to life.
I love working with a wide variety of stories including fiction (novels, short stories), non-fiction (memoir, narrative non-fiction), and scripts and screenplays (musicals, plays, films, short films).
With my backgrounds in applied linguistics (M.A.), English (B.A.), and history (B.A.), I approach language and stories with a careful and analytical eye.
I don’t want a co-writing credit: I want to help YOU refine your vision, strengthen your storytelling, and communicate your ideas as clearly as possible.
What I Offer
I provide developmental editing services to assess big-picture storyelling elements of your manuscript, such as: plot, structure, stakes, characters, theme, pacing, worldbuilding, and more.
I primarily offer two types of deliverables:
Manuscript Assessment. This is a 2-3 page editorial letter that provides general feedback on your manuscript, as well as my major recommendations.
Full Developmental Edit w/ Manuscript Notes. You will receive a 6-10 page editorial letter, along with comments and suggestions directly on your manuscript.
Depending on your needs, I can offer a flexible or amended version of these services. Let’s talk it through! (Generally, I do not offer copyediting or proofreading services at this time.)
To inquire about rates, please fill out the contact form along with a brief description of your project.
About Me
I’ve never known a time when I didn’t love reading and writing. My parents claim that I picked up how to read on my own, mainly by watching the PBS show Between the Lions. (“We thought we had a genius,” my mom says. I try not to place too much weight on her usage of the past tense.)
As I read and wrote my way through middle school and high school, I realized that I had a knack for editing. During college application season, I offered to edit my classmates’ essays free of charge. I was surprised by how fun editing was. It felt like polishing a gemstone — buffing out the rough edges and brushing away the dust to reveal something shining and entirely unique.
My love for language and stories propelled me through university, where I earned degrees in English (B.A.) and History (B.A.), along with a minor in Chinese. After graduation (and an unsuccessful attempt to complete my Fulbright grant — thanks COVID!), I moved to New York City to earn a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics from Columbia University.
I’m thrilled any time a writer entrusts me with their precious gemstone of a story. Let’s create something beautiful together.
